Yup, I'd say that's exactly what it's telling the kids watching it. Incidentaly (and a little off topic), I used to have really long hair and one day I cut it really short (long story). Let's just say I learned A LOT about some of my male friends from their reactions to my new haircut. Not good things. In my experience guys and girls both are really quick to police gender roles...
